On Wednesday 9th October six anxious karate students from the Bishops Stortford and Stansted Mountfitchet Shotokan Karate Ryu (SKR) clubs gathered at the Stansted Dojo to test for their black belts before a grading panel of Senior English Karate Instructors chaired by Sensei Michael Ring (6th Dan) one of the UK’s Senior Karate practitioners.

In a rigorous examination the students were tested on their basic techniques, Kihon Renshu, performing full speed and power combinations called out in Japanese by Sensei Ring for an exhausting 20 minutes of Kihon. This was a test of fitness and stamina as the relentless assault of combinations were rattled off without pause. With the Kihon section complete the examination moved without pause to Kata, formal exercises. Each student was asked to perform their chosen Kata and then 3 more Kata of the examiners choice. For 1st Dan this was 3 Kata from a list of 11 kata, for 2nd Dan from a list of 16 Kata and for the 3rd Dan candidate this was from a staggering 21 kata.

The penultimate stage of the examination focused on sparring drills and consisted of 20 minutes of defences against full power attacks to the head & body, and from front kicks, side kicks, round house kicks and turning kicks. Already tired the candidates had to dig deep to keep up with the relentless pace of grading with attackers being switched from side to side by Sensei Ring to add additional challenge to the examination. Pausing only long enough to don mitts and gumshields the final stage of the examination, Shiai Kumite or free sparring began where each student attempting their black belt must fight 3 or more opponents, demonstrating both the explosive power of their techniques, but also their ability to attack and defend in a vigorous, yet controlled manner. For the 3rd Dan candidate this also involved Happo Kumite or circle sparring where they stood at the centre of a ring of students who attached randomly at the examiner command.

After an exhausting hour long examination the Bishops Stortford and Stansted Mountfitchet Karate-ka were given their results: Joshua Tanner (11), Lampros Gidarkos (46) and Liam Dillon  (46) were all awarded ShoDan (1st Dan) black belt. The panel also agreed unanimously the following results: Jack Ring (13) and Ryan Ring (13) who train across both the Stansted and Bishops Stortford Dojos passed 2nd Dan Black Belt (Nidan) and Paul Walton (47), who was commended on his Kumite passed 3rd Dan Black Belt (Sandan).

Sensei Michael Ring then read out an announcement from Sensei Dave Sharkey (9th Dan) the Chairman of the English Karate Organisation and European Karate Organisation Governing Body: “Sensei Donna has been a member of the EKO for 15 years. In that time she has been an ambassador for Karate-do and consistently demonstrated her commitment to the art. SKR is one of the most highly regarded clubs in the EKO both for its high standards and its administration, which is second to none. Sensei Donna’s work with children is extraordinary and stands out amongst the Sensei I have known in my 56 years in Karate. Her nomination for 5th Dan / Godan is a privilege for me to endorse and has been approved by the senior instructors of the EKO. It is with great pleasure that I can confirm Sensei Donna Ring has been awarded her Godan (5th Dan).”

Latest Dan Grade Story

23 May 2018

Wednesday 23rd May saw 5 Karate players from the Bishops Stortford and Stansted Shotokan Karate Ryu (SKR) gather at their Stansted dojo for a black belt (Dan Grade) assessment before a grading panel of Senior English Karate Instructors. With a combined experience of over 50 years in karate-do, the panel was Chaired by Sensei Michael Ring (6th Dan) one of the countries most senior Karate practitioners.
The examination started with Kihon Renshu (basic combinations) given rapidly in Japanese without rest for 15 minutes. The test of basic combinations and Japanese terminology was intense, and candidates needed to be on top of their game to perform well.
This was quickly followed by each candidate performing their grading Kata (formal exercise). The four 1st Dan (Black belt) candidates needed to know 11 Kata, the 2nd Dan candidate needed to know 17 Kata. After the demanding Kihon Renshu, the Kata section put the candidates under even more pressure as they were asked to perform individually and in groups their knowledge of the Kata in their syllabus.
With barely time to catch their breathes candidates partnered up for Kumite (sparring), defending against punches to head and body, and a series of kicks, including Mae-Geri (front kick), Yoko-Geri (side kick), Mawashi-Geri (roundhouse kick), Ushiro-Geri (turning kick) and Ashi-barai (leg sweep). All attacking and techniques thrown at full speed and power.
The final stage of the assessment saw candidates don hand guards and gum shields for free-style matches against consecutive opponents. After 30 hard bouts, Sensei Ring called “Yamae” (finish) and the candidates were sent out so that the panel could discuss the outcome of the grading.
On returning to hear the panel’s decision, Sensei Ring awarded Charlie Jackson (10), Ben Tanner (12), Sam Fletcher (11) and Jack Fletcher (12) the rank of Shodan (1st Dan) and their black belts. Laura Herrod (31) from the Bishops Stortford SKR was awarded a well deserved Nidan (2nd Dan). Charlie Jackson received special recognition for his Mawashi-Geri (roundhouse) kicks to the head and body of his opponents, which were used to devastating effect.
Sensei commented: “The path to black belt and beyond is a hard and difficult one, many students who start on the journey never make it all the way, while others fall by the wayside. And yet, with courage and determination I have watch adults and juniors from the Bishops Stortford area rise to the challenge under the guidance of SKR Sensei (Instructors) and Sempai (Senior Students). For the three new black belts who started this journey at 4 years old in our Tiger-Tots programme, this is an incredible achievement. All the candidates demonstrated a commitment that their families can be proud of.”
Kellan Hookham (11) also successfully passed Shodan on 10th June.

“The Shotokan Karate Ryu is one of the outstanding clubs in England, with a standard of Karate that is 2nd to none. Dan gradings are designed to be tough, to test the calibre of students to the extreme, but SKR students keep rising to the challenge getting better and better each year.”

Sensei Sharkey, 9th Dan October 2016

“I have trained on and off for many years with different clubs never really advancing. Both of you have inspired and encouraged me to pursue my black belt, and the boys getting theirs on the same night was the icing on the cake.”

Chris Seal, 1st Dan – October 2016

“The Shotokan Karate Ryu is one of the outstanding clubs in England, with the highest standards of Karate from students and instructors.  The Shotokan Karate Ryu has a standard at black belt that any club would be proud of.”

Sensei Dave Sharkey, 9th Dan – October 2017

“This was another excellent result. The students attempting black belt demonstrated the strong technique and excellent control I have come to expect from the Shotokan Karate Ryu. It is good to see the already high standards at black belt being maintained. I was very pleased with the robust and spirited display of traditional Karate-do.”

Sensei Dave Sharkey, 9th Dan – April 2018

“I have immensely enjoy visiting the club over the last 14 years for Dan Gradings to watch the excellent standards of Karate. I know the club Sensei’s will continue to maintain standards to the benefit of the club and Karate-do as a whole.”
