On Sunday 3rd December 2023, a total of 129 Karate-ka from the Bishops Stortford based Shotokan Karate Ryu gathered at the Mountfitchet Romeera Leisure Centre in Stansted Mountfitchet to take part in the quarterly Kyu (coloured belt) grading.

The Grading was presided over by Sensei Michael Ring (7th Dan) and Sensei Donna Ring (5th Dan), both of whom have a cumulative teaching experience of over 45 years in traditional Shotokan Karate.

Kickstarting at 9am, the Kyu Grading stretched till 2pm, with each grading group completing a comprehensive evaluation of Kihon (basics), Kata (formal exercises) and Kumite (Sparring drills) for their new grades. The grading saw an outstanding pass rate of 100%. The Tiger Tots, the club’s youngest members aged between 4-6 years, were the first group to be graded. The Tiger Tots programme, established by Sensei Donna in 2004, is soon to mark its 20th successful year. A handful of students also participated in a mock grading to gear up for their black belt examination next year.

Sensei Michael remarked: “The grading served as a testament to the commitment and diligence of SKR students in their training. The quality of Karate showcased was commendable, and I look forward to witnessing students’ progression as they advance in their Karate journey.”
