A Karate-filled Father’s Day: Shotokan Karate Ryu’s Special Lesson for Dads
This year, Father’s Day at Shotokan Karate Ryu was an extra special occasion as we continued our popular tradition of inviting fathers to join their children for a complimentary karate lesson.
The 2026 event proved to be our biggest yet, with a record-breaking number of fathers taking part. It was fantastic to see so many dads stepping into the Dojo alongside their children, sharing in the experience and getting a real taste of what karate training involves.
Bright and early on Sunday morning, fathers and children arrived ready to train together. The session began with a fun warm-up before moving on to a range of karate techniques, giving the dads the chance to experience the focus, coordination and effort that their children put into every lesson.
The atmosphere throughout the class was brilliant, with plenty of energy, concentration and smiles all round. For many of the fathers, it was a chance to see karate from a completely new perspective – not just as spectators, but as participants.
After the lesson, we caught up with some of the dads to hear how they found the experience. One father said, “You don’t realise how much detail, discipline and concentration goes into karate until you try it yourself. It was great to have a go. Thoroughly enjoyed it”
The smiles on the faces of both the children and their dads said it all. It was a memorable Father’s Day celebration and a wonderful reminder of how karate can bring families together through shared effort, encouragement and achievement.
“You don’t realise how much detail, discipline and concentration goes into karate until you try it yourself. It was great to have a go. Thoroughly enjoyed it”

Shotokan Karate Ryu, with a rich history of over two decades in teaching traditional Karate in Bishops Stortford and Stansted, emphasises that karate is not just about physical strength but also about fostering discipline, respect, and self-esteem. Sensei Donna, 6th Dan, remarked, “It was an amazing turnout this year and great to see families having fun and training side-by-side. The smiles encapsulated it all”
We extend our gratitude to all the fathers who made this day special by joining us. We hope you enjoyed this unique lesson and that you will continue to help your children on their karate journey. For all the supportive mums, stay tuned. We have an exciting surprise in store for you too!
